The Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) was adopted by the United Nations on 10 April 1972 to prohibit the development, production, acquisition, transfer, stockpiling and use of biological and toxin weapons. The full title of the Convention is the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction. Having entered into force on 26 March 1975, the BWC was the first multilateral disarmament convention banning the production of an entire category of weapons, biological weapons, as a type of weapon of mass destruction (WMD). The Convention is of unlimited duration. As of February 2022, 184 states had become parties to the treaty.
